Justice for IOK rape victims demanded

SRINAGAR, (SANA): Protest demonstrations were held in Srinagar and Shopian in the backdrop of massive protests in Delhi following recent gang rape of a student to seek justice for the rape victims in Indian occupied Kashmir (IOK).

A group of students protesting outside the Press Enclave in Srinagar, said, ”We welcome justice for the rape victim in Delhi but at the same time we demand that justice for all such victims in Kashmir especially those who were raped in Kunan Poshpora in early 1990?s.”

“We demand … harsh punishment for the rapists,” said Owais Ahmad, one of the protesters.

The protesters assembled at Press Enclave under the banner of Youth Brigade of Kashmir and later dispersed peacefully. They were carrying placards demanding justice for victims of Kunan Poshpora and other such cases in Kashmir and also held a candle light vigil.

On the other hand, hundreds of people under the banner of Majlis-e-Mashawarat Shopian held a peaceful protest demonstration in the town against the recent Delhi gang rape. The demonstrators holding placards and raising slogans demanded stern action against the rapists.

Spokesperson of Majlis-e-Masharawat Shafi Khan, on the occasion said, “Who other than the people of Shopian could feel the pain which the people of Delhi are feeling. Our demand at this time is that strict punishment should be awarded to these rapists. We fully support the protesters in Delhi speaking from where we used to speak in 2009 from Shopian.
