Govt not entitled to reopen four constituencies: ECP

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): The Election of Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has clarified that the government is not entitled to open four constituencies of Punjab for investigation into rigging reports.

According to ECP spokesman, only the election tribunals are entitled to reopen Punjab’s four constituencies for verification of results, adding that the government and the ECP are not authorized in this regard.

Both ECP and the government have not authority on tribunals which are independent, he said. He said that the government could only order reopening of the four constituencies through securing authority from parliament after amendment in the constitution. He said that according to constitution the election tribunals are only authorized to reopen the four constituencies.

PTI chief Imran Khan had called for verification of voters thumb impression initially in four constituencies of the National Assembly, blaming the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz for massive vote rigging in the province. He then demanded a complete “audit” of results of the general elections held in May last year.

But now Khan wants the government to resign and new elections to be held. He is all set to lead a massive anti-government protest in Islamabad on August 14.
