Cold wave breaks 50-year weather record

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): The mercury goes down in Punjab plains setting new record of the lowest temperature in the country in 50 years, paralyzing the normal life and keeping the people indoors.

Meteorological department director Mohammad Hanif has said the cold wave has set a record of severe cold in the region in 50 years. Thick fog has engulfed Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Multan.

Due to dense fog, the day temperatures have fallen 10 to 12°C from the normal temperatures.

The weather bulletin said that cold air coming from Europe through Iran and Afghanistan is penetrating into the country continuously. Cold air, high level of humidity and delay in winter rainfall, are the reasons behind prolonged spell of dense fog.

In its weather forecast for Tuesday, Met office said mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country. Severe cold wave would continue to prevail over upper parts of Balochistan, KP and Gilgit-Baltistan. Dense foggy conditions would continue over plains of Punjab, Peshawar, Sukkur and Larkana divisions during the next 48 hours, mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country.
