At least 57 killed in Turkey quake

OKCULAR (SANA): At least 57 people were killed and over 50 people were injured while numerous houses were damaged as a result of a powerful earthquake in eastern Turkey on Monday.

The quake reportedly measured 6.0 on the Richter scaleat a depth of five kilometres while its epicenter was near the Karakocan town in Elazig province.

The rescue arrangements were being made in order to evacuate the people entangled under debris and to rush the injured to hospitals.

The rescue work also included the erection of tents, distribution of food and other emergency supplies to survivors.

According to CCN Turk, about 30 houses were destroyed in Okcular alone, Yasar Cagribay, head of a rescue team.

The villagers wrapped in blankets were screaming in a miserable situation while the rscue work was under way.
